Ask HN: What is the best food replenishment strategy?
2 points by testfoobar on March 15, 2020 | hide | past | favorite
What is the best and safest strategy for replenishing food during our social distancing?

Limits: 1. Every day you wait, the exponential rise goes against you and you risk greater exposure. 2. Every trip you take increases risk by definition as you mingle with other people. 3. Every day you wait, you risk the supplies running down and/or the supply chain stopping entirely. 4. Every day you wait, your own supplies are depleted further. 5. You can only store so much fresh milk, vegetables, fruit.

Questions: 1. Where do you go? 2. What do you buy? 3. What time of day do you go? 4. How often do you go? 5. How much do you buy?

Goals: 1. Minimize exposure. 2. Maximize food rations. 3. Help immediate community.

Thoughts: - I know there are as many special cases as there are people. For example, many people get their Rx filled monthly at the local pharmacy. They have to go out for that.

- Hoarding and panic buying don't help. Our whole social fabric has to survive.

- In my community, people are offerinig to help seniors and house-bound folks with shopping when they go on their own trips.

- Collate multiple trips - to both reduce number of people out and about and help your community.

- Be kind to retail workers. We're all part of a community, your health depends on their health.
