I share your view of the likely future, but unfortunately it seems very unlikely to me that the open source community is going to unite and prevent this in any significant way. What's happening might give a boost to open source hardware and that would be wonderful, but I don't think this hardware will have much of a chance of being economically competitive and capturing a market.
