The blog post makes no mention of it. Since it's not HOTP or TOTP, I don't think it's possible. https://blog.twitter.com/2013/login-verification-on-twitter-...

It won't as it's using a public/private key not the time based auth that Google Authenticator uses. If you don't want to use the Twitter app you can use SMS.
