Can someone fill me in on why this is so amazing? It's a closed protocol I guess, but if this guy could pull this together under the radar like this how hasn't it been done before?

Amazing because the iMessage protocol is surprisingly complicated and seemed to be almost unintelligible to anyone outside of Apple:
